Smart Resolutions for 2022
January 12, 2021

A new year is upon us! This is the time when millions of people often try to make resolutions to better themselves, such as wanting to lose a few extra pounds, quit tobacco, or obtain financial wellness. However, resolutions are not only for our personal lives, but they can be vital to our insurance businesses as well.
By taking advantage of the energy and momentum that surrounds the new year, you can make improvements to ensure better behaviors within your daily life. Here are a few resolutions you could incorporate in 2022:
Resolution #1: Get Healthier
We make this same resolution every year – after all, it’s the most common New Year’s resolution. We all know that sticking to losing weight, exercising more, and eating a healthier diet will make you look and feel better, but did you also know it will also make your insurance more affordable?
The advantage of becoming healthier will save money on doctor visits, medications, and insurance premiums. As you resolve to quit smoking or lose weight, these habits contribute to a healthier you, as well as to your dental and vision health.
When we care enough to make healthy living a priority, it impacts so many areas of our lives.
Resolution #2: Know Where Your Money is Going
Saving more, spending less, and paying down debt are all top-of-mind for many Americans second only to getting healthier. If the resolution is important to you—as overall financial wellness should be—you can utilize one simple tactic to help keep you on track.
Your financial wellness resolution should be smart and SMART. That’s an acronym coined for specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and timely.
- Specific. What exactly needs to be accomplished? Who else might be involved? Where will this take place? Why do I want to accomplish this?
- Measurable. How will I know if I have succeeded? How many steps will it take to achieve this?
- Attainable. Do I have the resources I need to make this happen? Is this goal neither too easy, nor too hard for me to accomplish? Will the steps I have planned help me reach my goal?
- Relevant. Can I commit to this goal? Will I not be able to reach another goal or do something else I want to do because I am working towards this goal?
- Timely. When is the deadline? When do I need to take action?
Resolution #3: Emergency Organization
Do you have a process to back up important documents in an emergency? During an emergency, a filing cabinet or bedside table may not be the first place you’d run, but it often contains essential documents—including insurance policies, bank information, real estate titles, wills, tax returns, birth certificates—that you don’t want to lose if a disaster strikes.
First, start by locating all the records you want to protect and make a digital backup of your documents. You can scan each document to make digital copies. Then, you can find a secure place to store your original documents, such as a flood/fire-resistant home safe, an offsite safe deposit box located outside of the house, or even an online storage lockbox.
