Goal Creation and Goal Setting with Ryan Eaton
What is goal setting, and why is this yearly task important?
Goal setting is setting targets for where you want to be in a specific time frame.
These goals can come in different time frames (1 month, 3 months, annual, or even 3–5-year goals).
They can be categorized by physical goals, financial goals, business goals, or a multitude of other categories.
The reason why it is important to set goals is because you want to have a purpose, target, or destination for what you are trying to reach. You want to have something that pulls you forward. Goals are not meant to be discouraging but exciting. Goals provide hope for the destination ahead. However, I don’t know anyone who sets great goals and accomplishes each one. Don’t let discouragement set in if you don’t accomplish each goal. Remember that if you hit all your goals, you probably are not setting targets that stretch you to be a better version of yourself.
What essential skills are required for not only successfully creating goals but also achieving these goals?
I don’t know if I would say “skills” are required for creating goals, but there are some standards.
You have probably heard it said before that goals should be SMART… specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely. Without a timeline on your goals, there is no target date.
If you don’t have a goal that is measurable, you will not know if you achieved it.
An example would be saying, “I want to lose weight.”
Well, if you wake up one-pound lighter tomorrow – do you cross it off your list? No, you want a specific amount and time frame to that goal…
Ex: In 3 months I will have lost 2 inches off my waist or lost 15lbs.
That goal is specific, measurable, attainable (depending on the person), realistic and timely. Remember… Rome wasn’t built in a day… We eat an elephant one bite at a time.
When it comes to achieving goals – you must monitor and measure your goals. Without regularly reviewing your progress, your chance for success is slim. You also need to build habits that align with your goals. The book Atomic Habits does a great job providing more information into this topic.
How often should someone review their goals throughout the year?
There isn’t a one-time frame fits all, but the more you review them the better odds you have at reaching your goals. Keep them somewhere that you can see them regularly – like a bathroom mirror or closet. As silly as it sounds, it like having a scale outside your shower – it keeps you accountable if you get on it each day.
What tips do you have for goal setting?
- Set habits and daily goals that align with your longer-term goals.
- Take a few minutes before starting each week to write out some weekly goals that will align with your long-term goals.
- Take time to think about where you want to be at the end of the year – what would you like to be different, what will add meaning and value to your life… also ask yourself is the goal I want worth the price I’ll have to pay to reach it
- Put your goals in writing and keep them in your closet or mirror where you can see them regularly
